Choice
Choice: the act of choosing : the act of picking or deciding between two or more possibilities : the opportunity or power to choose between two or more possibilities : the opportunity or power to make a decision : a range of things that can be chosen.
I'm not entirely sure why today this was the word that stuck in my head, but it's something that is a common theme in my life. Showjumping is all about choices. When we walk in the ring we can choose to participate that day, or we can be indecisive. For those of you who don't ride, let me explain one thing: indecision is ALWAYS bad. Riding horses and hoping something will work out typically ends poorly. The odd time one will be lucky and get away with indecision, but eventually it will catch up to you.
My fiancé Phil always likes to say, "you must live with the consequences of your actions". Normally he says this with a great deal of sass, but there is major truth to it. Every action requires a choice. There is one thing that people can never take away from us and that is our power to choose. Now, I'm not saying that it's an easy thing. But it is still the truth. Your ability to choose is always available. It's just whether you decide to or not. The people that tell you they didn't have a choice, made one in that instant.
I think one of my biggest pet peeves in life is indecision. Now, I'm not saying that it's bad to weigh options, analyze scenarios and take time to make a decision. Indecision to me is complete inaction with no intent to make a decision any time soon. In being inactive, you have made a choice. You've chosen not to do anything. Right there is the biggest regret, I think, that most people will end up with late in life. The moments of indecision add up to a lot of time. And time is our most precious commodity. Money? Money is a renewable resource. But time is finite and we are very good at wasting it thinking there'll always be more of it.
What choices have you been pondering lately that have led to indecision? If you've been waiting for "a sign", or someone to give you a nudge towards one or the other, this is it. If you've been weighing all of the possible consequences, and have narrowed it down to some livable repercussions of your decision, the lack of decision will likely be a worse outcome than anything you've imagined in your head. In making the decision you'll feel your own power. You'll realize that you're capable of making a decision and living with the consequences. And it'll become easier to make a decision next time.
Please don't let your life come down to long bouts of indecision. You'll waste months, possibly years, and live with the regret of "what could have been". And please, for your horses' sake, don't walk in the ring and be indecisive. Horses don't know whether you are right or wrong, but they do know when you doubt, or change your mind. That's the instant when all trust is lost. They need to know you are there for them, so they can be there for you.
